Middle Fork of the Salmon and Rogue Guide
Maggie
was born on a commune in Bodega, CA in a house that her mom built and
her dad repaired. As a child she roamed free with the chickens and sheep,
which were her closest playmates since her two older sisters were too
fast. At the age of four, she moved into her first house with electricity,
running water, and a flush toilet. Maggie says "each river trip reminds
me of my roots and how peaceful and amazing it is to sleep each night
in the comfort of the night's sky. What a lucky life we lead!"
She moved to Nevada City, CA at the age of 12 where she fell in love with the Yuba River. It was here, on the first day of the eighth grade, that she met Hata Hill, her favorite ECHO guide. She moved from Nevada City to study forest conservation at Humboldt State University and graduated with a degree in dance.
She says to the best of her knowledge that she has escaped death twice. Once when two tigers attacked her (you'll have to get the whole story from her) and the other on the island of Lanai, Hawaii while rappelling a 180 ft cliff on an unstable knot, which she advises against.
Maggie's older sister Sonja introduced her to the guiding lifestyle on the American River in California, and she's been hooked ever since. She's guided trips on the American, Kern, Trinity, Klamath, Rogue, and Salmon Rivers since her introduction to the "guiding lifestyle" nine years ago.
Maggie recently checked in with ECHO world HQ, and she's currently rafting the rivers of Central America before relocating to Portland, OR "to investigate this whole 'putting down some roots' thing I hear everyone talking about. I'll keep you updated..."
