Legendary River Guide
Mike
Burke first came to ECHO in 1973, when he was an undergraduate at Cal.
He has guided for us every year since then, except for the summer he
became a father and the year a shoulder injury kept him off the river.
He now guides a trip or two each season on the Middle
Fork.
For several years, Mike guided summers and roamed winters. He eventually took a degree in philosophy from Cal and then an MFA in creative writing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He dedicated his thesis, "To Dick and Joe (ECHO owners), without whom this would have been written nine years ago."
Mike is now associate professor of English at Colby College and Director of Honors Studies at the University of Maine at Farmington. His wife Pat is also a professor, and his daughter Harper is a high school senior.
Mike has written a book about his guiding life and his transition into
husband, father, professor, and all-around responsible citizen. It is
titled The Same River Twice and is available on Amazon. Young people
were wild in the 70's, and river guides were wilder than most. While
some of his old guiding buddies are appalled that he never refers to
ECHO by name in the book, we appreciate his thoughtfulness.
