Legendary River Guide
Dewi
was born in Wales but always had a wanderlust. He began climbing in his
own country but soon was traveling to France, Switzerland and Austria
for bigger challenges. He graduated from Liverpool University in 1974,
with majors in mathematics and physical education. He planned to become
a teacher, but soon decided life was too short to spend nine or ten months
a year in a classroom.
He moved to the US in 1978 and started guiding for ECHO in 1980 and has been with us in some capacity ever since. When not guiding or managing for ECHO, Dewi has climbed all over Europe and South America. He spends is winters in Park City where he has worked as a ski patrolman, director of snow safety, bartender, house painter, and property manager. He and his longtime girlfriend Lynn now own several properties and still manage to spend a few months a year climbing.
Dewi's scariest outdoor experiences were being caught in a snowstorm on Mont Blanc (after which he spent three weeks in the hospital being treated for frostbite) and almost getting shot (accidentally) by fellow ECHO guide Mike Burke while exploring rivers in Alaska.
