Can a rafting company be green?

ECHO: The Green Company

ECHO is committed to the Earth simply because we adore the outdoors and are dedicated to its preservation. We take people down two spectacular rivers, both of which were included in the initial Wild and Scenic River Act in 1968. So naturally (pun intended) we hope to enjoy the beautiful forested wilderness and remote river canyons for many years to come.

Toward this end, we are always working to reduce our carbon footprint, eliminate waste, and reduce our use of paper products both on our trips and in our office. Our guides also adhere to "Leave No Trace" camping guidelines and pack out all of the waste generated by our trips.

Our Commitment

  • Use email, web pages, and PDF's for invoices, correspondence, and evaluations.
  • We won't send you anything by mail unless you ask for it, except maybe a thank you card or our annual schedule mailer.
  • When we use paper it is 100% recycled or reused paper.
  • Comprehensive recycling programs in our office, guide houses, and river trips.
  • Continually reduce the amount of waste on our trips.
  • Improve energy efficiency in our office, guide houses, and transportation.

What We've Done Lately (we're always improving)

  • Annual mailer printed on 100% recycled paper, which was manufactured with 100% renewable wind energy.
  • Online registration reduces both paper & mail delivery.
  • New letterhead and business cards on 100% recycled paper.
  • Bought a new coffee maker for the office. We've agreed that paper or styrofoam cups are no longer allowed.
  • Dick and Zach's first video conference. This will reduce travel.
  • Turning off back up hard drives when not used to save energy.
  • New ECHO office in downtown Hood River so employees can walk or ride bikes to work.
  • Promotional materials also available as downloadable PDF to save paper and mail.
  • New promotional materials (brochures) on 100% recycled paper.
  • Bought two diesel trucks for our operations. These are more fuel efficient and we're working on using bio fuels.

Things we're excited about

  • Our new reservation system which has reduced paper mail by 95%
  • Using bio diesel or waste vegetable oil in our new diesel trucks.
  • Composting left over trip food.
  • Growing basil at our guide houses.
